Funding Available for Restoration on Private Lands

Animas River lined with invasive Russian olive trees

San Juan Watershed Group Animas River Funding: The SJWG is continuing our partnerships with private landowners in the Animas Valley! Throughout this past year, we have been working with landowners along the river, its tributaries, and irrigation ditches to do on the ground projects that improve river health and meet landowner goals – but there’s still funding available to do more! What kind of projects are we talking about? Eligible projects include: new livestock management/ exclusion fencing, new livestock watering facilities, planting grass, tree, and shrub filter strips along fields and riverbank, cover crop, sediment and water control basins, crop rotation assistance, soil testing for nutrient management assistance, erosion control structures, and more. To learn more and/or schedule an appointment for a tour of your property and to start developing a project plan, contact the San Juan Watershed Group Coordinator, Alyssa Richmond, at 505-234-6040 X3 and alyssa.richmond@sanjuanswcd.com.

Regional Conservation Partnership Program (RCPP) Funding for Invasive Species Restoration

San Juan SWCD is just getting started on our area’s first ever RCPP grant from the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS). This grant will provide $750,000 to agricultural producers in our area to address Russian olive and salt cedar removal and restoration via contracts with NRCS. Priorities for project funding: Properties that border the Animas, San Juan, or La Plata River, landscape scale projects of 5+ acres or adjacent to other removal projects, and those that plan to follow up to address resprouts and revegetate with native species. If you meet these priority criteria, we encourage you to sign up! Contact Gary Hathorn at 505-320-5056 or ghathorn@nmsu.edu for more information on how to apply.
